Gospel & Discipleship
"Remember to not teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the Spirit of God."
- Brigham Young
At Helaman Academy, President Young's counsel is an operational principle. Our gospel studies program exists to ensure that our students graduate not only academically prepared, but spiritually rooted, doctrinally literate, and personally committed to Jesus Christ.
Program Philosophy
Helaman's gospel studies curriculum is designed around a central conviction: spiritual formation is not supplemental to education, it is foundational. Our students are not simply taught about the gospel; they are taught in the gospel, guided to develop a personal relationship with their Savior, and equipped with the doctrinal clarity and moral courage necessary to navigate an increasingly secular world.
We recognize that today's students will face challenges to faith that previous generations did not encounter with such intensity or sophistication. They need more than Sunday lessons. They need strong scriptural literacy, historical grounding, doctrinal understanding, and the spiritual resilience that comes only from genuine conversion. Like the wise man in the parable, students anchored on the rock of Christ and His restored gospel can weather any storm.
Students are taught to engage with the scriptures. They learn to carefully read, thoughtfully discussed, and personally apply them to their lives. They develop familiarity with Church history, the Restoration, and the doctrinal foundations of the restored gospel. They are taught to think about their faith and actively grow it. Here our students ask honest questions and get real answers. Learning together, a class, seeks true understanding, and builds testimonies grounded in both reason and revelation.
Character formation runs alongside doctrinal instruction. Christlike attributes: integrity, accountability, charity, humility, and disciplined self-governance are practiced daily. Students see their teachers and the faculty uphold these values as they are woven into every classroom. Students learn to hold themselves to a standard that reflects their divine identity and potential.
Gospel study at Helaman also prepares students for the world they will enter. They graduate with a coherent moral framework, the ability to articulate what they believe and why, and the spiritual resilience to stand firmly in environments that may not share their values.
What we are ultimately producing is not just a student with religious knowledge. It is a young man or woman who knows who they are, what they believe, and how to follow Christ through the rest of their lives.
